Annapolis Blues pull away from FC Frederick

BUCKEYSTOWN, Md. — Matias de Jesus scored twice in the second half as Annapolis Blues FC pulled away for a 4-2 victory over FC Frederick on Sunday night at St. John’s Catholic Prep.

The University of Maryland rising junior first scored on a left-footed volley in the 59th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and later converted with his right foot on a 25-yard direct kick to seal the 4-2 margin.

Annapolis Blues improve to 3-0, while FC Frederick falls to 2-1.

Alex Wroblewski started the scoring for Annapolis in the 15th minute, tapping a pass from Taku Takahashi into an open net. Less than four minutes later, FC Frederick responded when Jack Mitzelfelt’s rising shot from 22 yards out, which was set up by a touch from Cole Hellert, dipped just beneath the crossbar and into the goal.

In the 30th minute, FC Frederick took a 2-1 lead when Robbie Ryerson caught Annapolis keeper Owen Allego off his line and looped a 35-yard shot into the goal. Jonathan Yowell assisted Ryerson’s goal.

Brady Geho tied the match at 2 in the 36th minute for Annapolis. The play started with an Annapolis corner kick by Toshi Davis to de Jesus. A couple of quick passes later, the ball was back on the feet of de Jesus, who fired a low shot. FC Frederick keeper Noah Kump got a hand on the shot, but Geho was attacking the back post and easily tapped in the equalizer.

Annapolis took control in the second half, outshooting FC Frederick 10-3, earning five corner kicks, and ultimately scoring the two decisive goals.

Annapolis outshot FC Frederick 20-11. Kump, who played all 90 minutes, made nine saves and kept FC Frederick in the match. Allegro, the Annapolis keeper, was called on for only three saves.

NOTES: Kump’s nine saves tied an FC Frederick single-game record, first set by Phil Breno during a 2016 match against the Richmond Strikers and matched in 2022 by Bennett Schwartz against First State FC. … Daniel Barrett made his FC Frederick debut Sunday night but it was short-lived. Barrett came on in the 84th minute but was red-carded and forced to leave the match three minutes later. … Annapolis, the reigning Mid-Atlantic Conference champions, has won all three meetings against FC Frederick, yet FC Frederick has held leads in two games. … Wroblewski’s goal Sunday upped his conference-leading total to six goals in three matches.
